Kaizer Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung says the club is satisfied with its current squad but insists the door will remain open should a top-quality player become available.
Chiefs were the busiest club during the off-season, signing 11 new players, including Khanyisa Mayo, Lebohang Maboe, Siphesihle Ndlovu, Asanele Velebayi, Paseko Mako, Thabiso Monyane and Etiosa Ighodaro, among others.
However, the heavy recruitment did not translate into silverware in the first half of the season. Orlando Pirates emerged as the dominant force, winning the MTN8 for a record fourth consecutive time and lifting the Carling Knockout Cup for the first time since 2011.
Chiefs watched their Soweto rivals claim the trophies while they continued rebuilding. Despite signs of improvement, Amakhosi currently sit fourth on the Betway Premiership table with 24 points from 13 matches.
Adding to their frustration, Pirates are also top of the league standings with 28 points from 12 matches, four points clear of Chiefs.
With the January transfer window now open, Mamelodi Sundowns made headlines by signing Monnapule Saleng from Pirates — a player Chiefs had also shown interest in.
Despite this, Motaung reiterated that Chiefs would not hesitate to act if the right opportunity presents itself.
“We won’t close the door if a special player becomes available,” Motaung told Isolezwe.
“If that happens, we will look at the situation.
“We are satisfied with the squad we have because some players who were injured are now returning.
“We signed many players at the start of the season, and some of them have not played yet.”
Among those yet to make an appearance are left-back Nkanyiso Shinga, signed from Portuguese side FC Alverca, and Ethan Chislett from Port Vale in England, both sidelined by injuries.
“It is not easy to join Kaizer Chiefs, which is why some players take time to settle,” Motaung added.
“They need to adapt to the team so that everything can work properly.
“We do not want to keep changing the squad.”
Following the Africa Cup of Nations break, Chiefs will resume their Betway Premiership campaign when they host Golden Arrows at FNB Stadium on 20 January.
