Mamelodi Sundowns star Lucas Ribeiro Costa has confirmed his immediate departure from the club.
The Brazilian international did not disclose his next destination, but he has been linked with a move to Spain. His exit follows a recent standoff with Sundowns, who had initially refused to sell him, stating that he had terminated his contract.
It appears the two sides have now reached an agreement, allowing the PSL Footballer of the Season and Top Goalscorer to leave as a club legend.
Costa had previously threatened to take the matter to a FIFA tribunal to force his transfer.
Costa’s Farewell Message
In an emotional statement, Costa reflected on his time at Sundowns. “From the very first day I arrived, I gave my all, on and off the field, to earn my place and proudly defend Mamelodi Sundowns,” he wrote. He expressed gratitude for the team, coaches, and “Masandawana supporters,” calling the past two years “incredible.”
“I want you to know that your support and love meant so much to me, and I will never forget you,” Costa’s statement continued. “I will always carry in my heart the memories of the emotions I lived, the goals, the assists, the trophies, and the magical nights with you that made me feel at home.” He added that he wished he could have said goodbye in a “better way.”
Costa joined Sundowns in 2023 and became a key player, tallying 37 goals and 23 assists in 88 matches across all competitions.
