Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze admitted it was frustrating that his side could not score more goals despite beating Golden Arrows in a Betway Premiership match at FNB Stadium on Tuesday.
The only goal of the match, scored by defender Aden McCarthy, appeared to be offside, a decision that left Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi incensed with the refereeing for failing to spot the infringement.
The victory marked a better start to the year for Chiefs compared to last year, when they lost their opening match in 2025. It also saw Amakhosi complete a league double over Abafana Bes’thende for the first time since the 2019/20 season.
“We started very well in the first half. We had control of the game and were trying to penetrate their defensive block,” Kaze told SuperSport TV after the match.
“We spoke at the beginning of the game about the importance of set pieces, because they can determine the outcome. We scored from a set piece, which gave us more freedom and confidence to keep playing.
“It’s just a little frustrating that we couldn’t score a second goal and kill the game, but I’m very happy with the three points.”
The win moved Chiefs up to third place on the Betway Premiership standings with 27 points from 14 matches, one point behind bitter rivals Orlando Pirates, who have two games in hand.
Mamelodi Sundowns dethroned Pirates at the top of the table on Monday after beating Orbit College, moving to 29 points from 14 matches.
“I believe we played very well and were threatening in attack. There was no need to sit back — the best defence is to attack and keep the opponent busy,” Kaze continued.
“These three points in 2026 will give us more calmness as coaches and reduce the pressure. We hope it gives us good momentum going into our CAF Confederation Cup match on Sunday.”
Chiefs will host ZESCO United in a Confederation Cup group-stage encounter at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday.
